Chiropractic is a one hundred year old system of healthcare based upon the uninterrupted function of the spinal nerves. Since the entire body is regulated and supported by the information carried in these large nerves, the hypothesis is that disease and illness develop from tissue that has had its neural information disrupted. The healing technique focuses on freeing the interrupted data flow by aligning vertebra in the spine.
This system has proved its worth over the past century as Allopathic medicine has waged an all-out war on Chiropractic almost since its inception. That any healing art can survive and flourish under this kind of constant oppression confirms its healing ability.
Chiropractic was relied upon by the citizens of the American Midwest throughout the Depression. At the same time, Doctors of Chiropractic were being harassed and jailed at the instigation of the Medical Fraternity. Under these circumstances one would expect a superstition or hokum medical fraud to vanish. Yet Chiropractic emerged as a National Health Care System with International Recognition.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The essential power of Chiropractic rests in its recognition of “The Subluxation”. The subluxation was initially defined as an obstruction of the flow of Life Force through the spinal nerves of the body. Although the technology was not available to exactly describe what the “flow of Life Force” means (there is still controversy on this topic), the clinical success that was observed by these treatments gave credence to the theory.
Originally, most clinical evidence was anecdotal and sheer observation. People were simply seen to improve. By the 1980’s Research Funds began to be available to academic researchers for the study of the Chiropractic Healing Effect. Quite a few PhD’s and DC’s have devoted their full energies upon this question. Many beneficial effects have been documented:
Nerve signals leaving a compressed spinal nerve with as little as 7mm of Hg pressure were reduced by 50% in intensity and garbled with noisy discharges.
When a vertebra is “adjusted”, that is, moved from its dysfunctional position to its appropriate position with respect to the other vertebrae, there is a cascade of neurologic signals extending several vertebrae above and below the vertebra that was moved. This enormous rush of signals swamps multiple nerve networks and fills the brain with a sudden burst of information. The brain then responds in equal measure exciting not only the nerves that emit at said vertebra but also flooding the entire nervous system with signals.
Neurotransmitters, message biochemicals (e.g. prostaglandins, coenzymes, etc.) and changes in the chemical makeup of the fluid in and around the vertebral joints occurs immediately upon adjusting the vertebra.
Distal changes in oxygenation and circulation have been noted following the adjustment and throughout the body. White Blood Cells seem to increase in activity if observed immediately after the adjustment.
As yet a single All-Powerful Chiropractic effect has not been found. It appears that the restoration of the Spinal Dynamics liberates numerous stimulatory and health intensifying effects.
But even though, especially in the Midwest in the 20’s and 30’s, Chiropractic was credited with curing pneumonia, TB, Pertussis, migraines, and a thousand other ailments, Today it is much more difficult to recover from disease by Chiropractic techniques alone. However, there is no better treatment for spinal illnesses. Few therapies correct back pain and headaches, neck pain or joint problems like Chiropractic. And today, Chiropractic has found a niche in modern health care as “Back Specialists”.
With the diminishment of the Chiropractor’s identity as a healer and the diminishment of the patient’s expectation to be healed by the adjustment began a diminishment in the efficacy of the Chiropractor. In the early 1930’s Chiropractors were documented curing severe illness with one adjustment. By 1985 it took an average of 20 adjustments to eliminate lower back pain. In 2000 the average number of office visits a chiropractor requested to cure a low back pain syndrome was 54! And numerous modalities had been added to facilitate in the production of a healing response.
At The Healing Experience, Chiropractic is a very important part of returning your body to normal function. Simple back pain can be remedied on the first or second visit. We rely on the healing power of Chiropractic, but we don’t stop there…
Not only is it important to clear the spine of vertebral subluxation, but the blockage in healthy function is distributed more widely than in just the spinal vertebrae. The Healing Experience is built upon the observation that a “subluxation”, that is a blockage in the normal, healthy function of the body can lie in any physiologic system and, frequently, it can be found in more than one. So we treat more than one level of physiologic function.
We have found that many of the standard Chiropractic techniques are wonderful at correcting imbalances of the spine, but they are particularly effective when combined with the treatment of muscle and nutritional deficiencies. It is this multi-level approach that produces the extremely rapid recovery experienced by our patients.
