THE HEALTH INSURANCE DEBACLE:
WHY WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING YOUR INSURANCE

We are no longer affiliated with any insurance company or program. For twenty years we tried working with the insurance companies and we have never found them to really be of assistance. Consistently, just like every health care professional, we have received only a fraction of our fees from the insurance company. Most other health care workers compensate by adding more treatment modalities on to your visit. This increases the fee and , consequently, the fraction of that fee the insurance company actually pays. It is the principle reason for the spiraling increase in health care costs in the US.

At the Healing Experience we have only accepted insurance in automobile cases. Since regular Health Insurance does not pay as they contract they will, we do not accept any insurance carrier but ask the patient to pay their bill. This benefits us both. By us being paid after each service, we can keep costs low and not be forced to continually raise our fees as the insurance company finds new ways to diminish our payment. The benefits for the patient are more long term.

Whenever you use your insurance, they have a record of the state of your health. In order to get paid, the insurance companies require that your doctor include clinical findings and office notes with the bill. The insurance companies store the data from these office notes so that they have visit by visit records of the state of your health. Their actuaries determine your premium based upon this information. If you use health insurance to pay for recurrent chiropractic care, the actuaries will assume that you have a spinal problem and you will be documented in the Big Computer as a spinal risk. They have all your doctor’s findings and they produce expectations of what your health will be like in the future based upon the health care you have now. Their tables will be used to determine your insurance rate as you age. It will not be based upon the health you have at the time you apply as much as the predicted problems they expect you to have based upon their data.

It used to be that if you changed insurance carriers, you had a choice of what to tell them about you. You were a blank slate each time you had a new insurance company. HIPAA changed all that. The Health Insurance Portability Act permits you to move easily from one insurance company to another, but they get to share their information on you with each other. You are completely known to their actuaries, thus their rates are similar and you are at their mercy.

You can control this, however, by simply paying for minor health care as you go. Anything you pay for and do not submit to the insurance company is invisible to them. You will appear healthier and get a better premium. You will also be giving their computers less information on you, who knows how that information may be used in the future?

So we ask you to be responsible for your balance. The statement we provide you is complete with everything your insurance company needs to reimburse you. You need only add our statement to a copy of your insurance information and mail them to your company to merit reimbursement. But we do not really recommend it.

The present state of health care and the insurance industry is a debacle, as we all know. We actually think it is better not to tell your insurance company you saw us. For less than $500 a year (an average price of our services to fix you) you have given their actuaries the information that you saw a specialist about your spine. It will be tallied up against you as the insurance companies share information. For such a powerful healing experience at a much lower cost than anywhere else, you give your insurance company the wrong impression. They record that you were sick and have a weak spine, when, in reality, you were proactive and got your problem healed before it became a true illness. One day the insurance companies may make a distinction between illness treatment and wellness care, but that day has yet to arrive. Therefore, think about not informing your insurance carrier or, better still, go to your HR person and inquire about Health Accounts where you get a certain financial budget to spend on health, preferably without the need to file documentation with an insurance carrier.

It is your body and your health, we recommend that you be judicious with whom you share your personal information.
